From Measure To Matter: Planetary Practices Beyond Calculation
A collaboration of GEO and HAU under the direction of the 2025 Planetary Transitions Artists in Residence Sam Spurr, Eduardo Kairuz and Angela Lee
Invited guest: Daniel Barber, Professor of Architecture at Eindhoven University of Technology
Workshop: Thursday, February 26, Friday, February 27, 10:00 to 17:00
This two-day transdisciplinary workshop brings together creative thinkers* from the fields of architecture, art, critical theory, and social sciences to discuss issues of scale and representation within contemporary energy systems. Against the backdrop of the escalating climate crisis, rising social inequality, and profound geopolitical upheaval, the workshop addresses the growing realization that predominantly data-driven approaches to planetary action do not bring about serious sociopolitical change. In response, material, spatial, embodied and affective practices are brought to the fore as critical fields of investigation.
The workshop will conclude with a public panel discussion open to all.
If you are interested in participating in this workshop, please contact Sam [dot] Spurr1 [at] newcastle [dot] edu [dot] au.
Public panel discussion: Friday, 27 February, 18:00 to 20:00
The panel discussion will provide an opportunity to share and discuss the results of the workshop with a wider audience. Building on the ideas and methods developed during the workshop, this discussion will take up new strands of discussion and discuss common ones. Participants from the fields of architecture, art, environmental and social sciences will speak on issues of matter, scale and embodiment that have shaped their collaborative work. The event aims to place these findings in a broader context of contemporary energy debates and to stimulate dialogue, criticism and new perspectives.
