Background

Hydrogen can be a key solution for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. To play this role, however, it must be ensured that hydrogen production genuinely contributes to greenhouse gas emission reductions. At the same time, production brings challenges, particularly regarding land and water use, which can undermine social acceptance and spark conflict. Without proper management, these risks may harm local communities and their livelihoods.

Effective sustainability governance is crucial to ensure an ecologically and socially responsible scale-up. This involves international standards, credible certification, regulation, and financial support schemes that integrate sustainability requirements. Such structures are essential both for local acceptance and for building long-term global partnerships in the hydrogen economy.

Objectives and Content

Through a series of webinars, the Research Institute for Sustainability is fostering dialogue on these issues. Against this background, this event will present findings from a study on sustainability governance in the hydrogen sector, focusing on approaches in India, South Korea, and Japan. The study was co-developed by RIFS with partner institutions and experts from the Asia-Pacific region.
