Headline: Implementing the Paris Agreement: New Lecture Series at IASS

Cities have become important actors in the global climate change regime, and they often portray themselves as frontrunners. When states don’t do enough, cities need to act, so the narrative goes. But it’s a narrative that is being challenged from two sides now, says Helmut Aust of the FU Berlin: the rise of populism and the Paris Agreement. Aust outlined this tension in his talk on “Cities and Climate Change in the Populist Post-Paris World”, which marked the launch of a new lecture series at IASS.

The IPA lecture series is a regular gathering that will take place three times per semester. It’s hosted alternatively by the IASS and by our partner institutions, including universities and think tanks committed to creating an open space for discussion. The series is organised by the IASS project Implementing the Paris Agreement – Overcoming Barriers and Identifying Drivers for Effective Climate Governance.

The lectures are an invitation to anyone engaged in climate change activities and studies to openly and critically discuss issues related to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Through this multidisciplinary exchange, we hope to provide an up-to-date view of the many influences, practices, and policy aspects that shape this phase of implementation.

The implementation of the Paris climate agreement is at the top of today’s international climate governance agenda, and it involves not just State Parties but also other actors, such as civil society, the private sector, NGOs, and universities. The IPA lecture series is an initiative that invites various partners to reflect on the practices, politics, and effects of the implementation of the new treaty from different perspectives.
