The IASS at the UN Ocean Conference
United Nations, New York
Side Event: Marine Protection and the Sustainable Development Goals
With its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations has adopted an ambitious agenda for the future of human society through to 2030, that ranges from the alleviation of poverty and hunger, to economic growth and sustainable consumption. SDG 14 is dedicated to the protection of the oceans and the sustainable use of marine resources.
But how do efforts to protect the oceans interact with activities aimed at achieving other development goals? What trade-offs and synergies are there? These issues will be addressed in a panel discussion organised by the International Council for Science (ICSU) in cooperation with IASS experts on ocean governance and other partners.

Side Event: Sharing Knowledge for Integrated Ocean Management
What factors contribute to the success of marine conservation initiatives? What best practice examples are there? Organised by the IASS in cooperation with the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other partners, this event will provide a forum for the sharing of knowledge. It brings practitioners and representatives of marine conservation organisations together with experts on environmental science and sustainability to discuss case studies and potential solutions. A particular focus will lie on ocean acidification, which is destroying coral reefs and other forms of marine life and undermining the economic foundations and coastal infrastructure of many small island states. An IASS Policy Brief on capacity development for sustainable ocean management will form the basis of this discussion.
