Headline: UN Commission CEPAL and IASS sign collaboration agreement

By the end of July 2011 CEPAL and IASS have signed an agreement concerning sustainable development and renewable energies. The objective is to set up a programme with joint projects of mutual interest. Both institutions share a commitment to furthering the promotion of science and research on global sustainability, particularly in the areas of climate change, new technologies and advanced training of young scientists as well as the exchange of scientific information and social dialogue in areas such as climate stability, energy security and resource efficiency.


CEPAL is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations and has its headquarters in Santiago, Chile. The mission of CEPAL is to contribute to the economic development of Latin America; foster operations directed to its promotion and reinforce the economic relations of the countries and with other nations in the world. This work was subsequently extended to the countries of the Caribbean with the objective to promote social development;
In the framework of this agreement, four fellows from Chile and Brazil have already arrived at the IASS in Potsdam to join the Earth, Energy and Environment Cluster (E3). Together with Prof. Rubbia and his team and in collaboration with the Universidad Politécnica of Madrid (UPM-ETSII) they will work on a first project focused on the development of a concentrating solar power platform in Latin America.
