Headline: Putting Soils and Land on the SDGs Agenda: defining potential indicators

The European Commission, the German Federal Environmental Agency, and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) are hosting a 2-day workshop which aims to further the discussion at the First Global Soil Week in 2012.

Soil and land resources will likely form part of the final set of Rio+20 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which has created momentum to initiate discussions on the need to develop clear indicators that fit the circumstances of the different regions and countries.

The objective of the SDG-Working group is to discuss the concept of land degradation neutrality (LDN) and to develop a proposal on a set of LDN indicators of physical and socio-economical nature as appropriate. The proposal will be discussed in a dialogue session at the second Global Soil Week (27-31 October 2013) with relevant stakeholders from around the world.
