Sylvia Borbonus joined the IASS as senior researcher in 2015. The economist and political scientist explores how transition processes towards sustainable energy systems in developing countries and emerging economies can be designed in a way that they contribute to development and sustainability goals. To this end, she develops methodologies in order to assess opportunities and conditions of energy systems transformations for society and to identify conflicting goals. Sylvia Borbonus applies transdisciplinary approaches, currently in the project “Mobilizing the Co-benefits of Mitigation Action”. Before joining the IASS, she worked with the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, where she led various research and advisory projects. Her focal areas were transformation of energy systems in developing countries and emerging economies and socio-economic impact analysis. Sylvia Borbonus holds a PhD in economic and social sciences, and studied in Cologne, Zurich and Sevilla.
