Affiliate Scholar

Janosch Pfeffer is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Sustainability Governance at Leuphana University Lüneburg, an affiliate scholar at the IASS, and associate at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance in Canberra. His research interests lie at the intersection of deliberative democracy, democratic innovations, social norms, and climate and environmental governance. In his current research projects, Janosch is concerned with the question whether, or under which conditions, deliberative mini-publics, such as citizens' assemblies, can enable more ambitious climate action at the national level, while limiting risks of policy backlashes and societal polarization. Janosch is actively engaged in the international Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies (KNOCA), and currently co-leading one of their Knowledge Development Projects. Next to political science and theory, he has engaged with economics, social theory, sustainability science, complexity science, and social psychology. As member of Klima-Mitbestimmung JETZT, Janosch works at the intersection of science and practice, advocating for analytic-deliberative participation processes in the German socio-ecological transformation and facilitating knowledge exchange between science, participation practice, and politics.
