Kanako Hasegawa

Kanako Hasegawa joined IASS Ocean Governance team in June 2018 as a Research Associate. She works for the Partnership for Regional Ocean Governance (PROG) Marine Regions Forum project. The Marine Regions Forum is envisioned to be a cross-sectoral and cross-boundary multi-stakeholder platform for regional ocean governance. The forum will be designed through stakeholder participation.

Previous to the current position, she worked for the UN Environment Programme as associate programme officer from 2015 to 2018. At the UN Environment Programme, she was leading the development of regional action plans on marine litter together with the Regional Seas programmes. Recently, she led the organization of the first meeting of the ad hoc open-ended expert group on marine litter and microplastics under the UN Environment Assembly.

She has a BSc (Honors) environmental science from McGill University and a MSc Nature, Society and Environmental Policy from the University of Oxford. She is fluent in English, Spanish and Japanese and worked in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
