Vom 9. bis 18. August 2021 widmet sich die siebte, virtuelle Potsdam Summer School dem Thema „Wasser: Unser globales Gemeingut – die Hydrosphäre an Land und auf See“. Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler sowie junge Fachleute aus der Privatwirtschaft, aus Behörden und Nichtregierungsorganisationen können sich noch bis Ende März 2021 dafür bewerben.

Better Climate Governance Matters

As countries begin to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change continues to exacerbate, COP26 in Glasgow in 2021 seeks to move towards increased 2050 ambition, conclude negotiations of the Paris Rulebook and shine a spotlight on the importance of non-national actors. The 2020 Climate Dialogues moved discussions into a virtual space. These developments raise questions about the future shape of the UNFCCC meetings and how they can best facilitate the global implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Global South: Where and what is it?

The term Global South refers to different parts of the world from a rather cartesian perspective and is being used at an accelerated pace. Such fact raises questions not only regarding its appliance but also related to its proper definition and what it implies. On the one hand, which metrics could be used for its definition, and on the other, which subjective features does it carry? These questions could be raised from a social, political and economical perspective.
The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) decided to promote a discussion with specialists from different countries and would like to count with your participation. Bearing in mind two simple questions: Not only what is the global south, but also where is it.

A recent IASS-UBA Policy Brief entitled "A comprehensive approach to the payment mechanism for deep seabed mining" was successfully launched during a webinar on 25 March 2021 with over 60 participants in attendance. The event centred on the core message of the policy brief, which was that greater emphasis needs to be placed on the environmental values and non-monetary benefits for humankind associated with the Area and its mineral resources, which are the common heritage of mankind, in developing the payment mechanism at the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
