An Assessment of the Impact of Black Carbon on Air Quality and Climate in the Kathmandu Valley and Surrounding Area – A Model Study (BERLiKUM)

Large parts of Southern Asia, including this region, are among the most heavily polluted areas in the world. Air quality has become a major environmental and health concern in Nepal, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley, where industrialisation, urban growth, and increasing road traffic are major contributing factors. Little research has been conducted here to date on the causes and impacts of poor air quality on the environment and human health. This model study aims to assess the impact of black carbon on air quality in the region and the broader effects of air pollutants on regional climate. Researchers are also engaging with local scientists and experts to identify which measures to reduce emissions lead to improvements in air quality.
