Headline: Parliamentary Evening: “A Sustainable Future für Oceans and Coasts – Implementing the 2030 Agenda”

Oceans cover over seventy per cent of the surface of our planet and are a central component of Earth’s life support systems. They play an important role in climate regulation and produce half of the planet’s oxygen. With their rich biodiversity and productivity, oceans make a valuable contribution to food security and employment.

With the 2030 Agenda, the international community has forged an agreement for the future of our world. The United Nations member states have agreed to implement the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in the Agenda by 2030. SDG 14 aims to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Together with officials from the German Government, members of the German Parliament and representatives of organisations from science, civil society, and the economy, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS, Potsdam), would like to take this opportunity to discuss the implementation of SDG 14 and other Sustainable Development Goals relevant to the oceans and seas at the Parliamentary Evening “A Sustainable Future für Oceans and Coasts – Implementing the 2030 Agenda”.
