The Commission’s package on Clean Energy for All Europeans strives to provide a fair deal for consumers. Yet what would a fair energy transition actually entail in citizens' eyes? What is their stance on new technologies like smart meters or smart heating devices? Are there opportunities for them to participate in the energy transition – and do they want to?

Based on two different empirical studies from Germany and France, we will discuss these and other questions on how citizens perceive the energy transition and the opportunities and challenges associated with it.

The study from Germany is based on the Social Sustainability Barometer for the German Energiewende 2017, which was published by the IASS in cooperation with dynamis. The results are based on a representative household survey of more than 7,500 German households.

The study from France is based on Le rapport des Français à l’énergie, which was published by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung France and is based on a representative survey of more than 1,000 French citizens.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion will bring together European representatives from policy, civil society and business to discuss what these results mean for EU energy policies that aim to give consumers a fair deal and spur the clean energy transition.

The meeting will start at 1.30 pm. Registration and a light lunch will be offered from 12.30 pm onwards.
