Dr Lorenzo Cremonese is a research associate in the Pathways for Sustainable Energy project. He studied Earth Sciences at the D’Annunzio University in Chieti (Italy) and completed his PhD in geochemistry at University College London in 2012. He joined the IASS in January 2013 and started working on the environmental hazards of conventional and unconventional gas extraction in Europe and worldwide. He is strongly engaged in the debate on natural gas as a bridging fuel to renewable energy systems, and in the investigation of the carbon footprint of natural gas, with a particular focus on methane leaks that occur along the production chain. He also has a deep understanding of all the issues related to shale gas production, a controversial topic in Germany and many other countries. Dr Cremonese joined the Decarbonisation of the Energy System research team in January 2017, where he investigates the heating sector and smart heating technologies.
