Franz Mauelshagen ist seit April 2018 Affiliated Scholar des IASS.

Davor war er bis Ende März 2018 Senior Fellow am Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) und dort dem Forschungsbereich SIWA, Sustainable Interactions with the Atmosphere zugeordnet. Seine Arbeit widmet sich dem Anthropozän und den Implikationen dieser Idee für die Globalgeschichte, für die globale Umweltgeschichte und unser Verständnis der Moderne und ihren Ort in der Geschichte großer Transformationen.

Dr. Mauelshagen hat mit Magister Artium in Philosophie, Geschichte und Rechtswissenschaften an der Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität in Bonn (Deutschland) abgeschlossen und an der Universität Zürich (Schweiz) im Fach Allgemeine Geschichte der Neuzeit promoviert.

Franz Mauelshagen war danach Postdoktorand an den Universitäten Bielefeld (2000-2003) und Zürich (2003-2008) und hat Lehraufträge an den Universitäten Bielefeld, Zürich, Bern und St. Gallen wahrgenommen. 2008 ging er als Koordinator des Programmbereichs KlimaKultur an das Kulturwissenschaftliche Institut Essen (KWI). Dort war er auch von 2010 bis 2014 Mitglied des Institutsvorstandes. 2013 wurde seine Dissertation im Rahmen des Programms „Geisteswissenschaften International - Preis zur Förderung der Übersetzung geisteswissenschaftlicher Literatur" (gefördert vom Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, Auswärtigen Amt, Fritz Thyssen Stiftung und der VG Wort) ausgezeichnet. 2014/5 war er Fellow am Rachel Carson Center für Umwelt und Gesellschafter der Ludwig Maximilians Universität München.
