Headline: “The Substance of Transformation”: Global Soil Week 2015

Focussing on the theme of “Soil. The Substance of Transformation, the third Global Soil Week will take place in Berlin from 19 to 23 April 2015. The Global Soil Week is a multi-stakeholder platform and process for change in the areas of sustainable soil management and responsible land governance. It brings together various players, from respected experts, scientists and policy-makers who work on environmental and developmental issues, to representatives of local and regional organisations who share their experiences on the ground. By collaborating with a wide array of well-known international partner organisations and issuing an open call for contributions, the Global Soil Week encourages the active participation of a broad range of participants with different perspectives. The unique format thus bridges different stakeholder communities and translates into engaging sessions with an international perspective.

In the UN International Year of Soils, the Global Soil Week offers a window of opportunity to put soils and land on the international political agenda as a key to sustainable development. The demands placed on the finite resource soil are many and the stakes are high. Soils are crucial to ensuring water, energy and food security for the 9 billion citizens expected to inhabit the planet in the year 2050. They are also essential for maintaining and establishing thriving societies now and in the future.
