How can we systematically learn how to prepare for and minimize the risks to society of natural disasters, rapid global spread of diseases, and human-caused accidents and how are these linked with the sustainability challenges we face all over the world? These are crucial issues that Prof Kaoru Takara, Director of Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Japan will discuss in the context of the Kyoto University's Global Survivability Studies program. This will be an informal presentation and discussion in which all are welcome to join.

Prof. Takara will introduce the Inter-Graduate School Program for Sustainable Development and Survivable Societies that was initiated since 2011 and currently has 67 graduate students from nine graduate schools in the university. It focuses safety and security with four research areas: huge natural disasters, man-made disasters and accidents, regional environmental change (including infectious diseases), and food security. Various activities of GSS will be introduced. The DPRI was established in 1951 and this year celebrates its 65-year history. Prof. Takara also introduces DPRI’s activities in many research fields in natural hazards and integrated disaster risk management. The DPRI established the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI) in March 2015 and held the first Board of Directors meeting in Kyoto on 22 March 2016. The GADRI currency has 91 organizations from 26 countries/areas.
